Day 1 - San Angelo to Canyon, TX - What a great day! 304 miles

Up bright and early at 5:40 a.m.! Yes, we were excited to be leaving. We had hooked up the car last night. We picked up my brother Al at 7:00 a.m. He was ready! After our goodbyes to his wife, Les, we headed towards Big Spring where we stopped at the VA and picked up Al's meds. We made several stops along the way and enjoyed lunch in Plainview, TX in a church parking lot. There was a huge field full of BIG Texas Jackrabbits! They entertained us all through lunch. We arrived in Canyon about 2 p.m. staying at the Palo Duro RV Park. Nothing fancy but full hook ups for $25 and only 10 miles to Palo Duro Canyon State Park. We surprised Al (the main reason we left so early) as he had never seen "the second largest canyon in the U.S." and it truly is a site to behold! Charles and I have camped down in the canyon twice in past years and I always see wild turkeys and today was no exception! The drive down into the canyon is 2 miles long with a full 10% grade! The cool, springtime weather and a fine, misty drizzle on and off did not deter us. We felt like we had the whole park to ourselves and it is BIG! There were only 2-3 rigs in each campground and about 4 other people in the visitor center/museum with us. On June 1 each year, the famous outdoor play "Texas" starts their summer performances in the amphitheater. Charles and I have seen it twice and absolutely love it! The natural backdrop for the stage is the canyon wall. The acting, singing, pyrotechnics are all first rate. GO, if you ever get the chance!
We came back to the park so I could work some more and then we headed into town to Feldman's Wrong Way Diner. We have eaten here in years past and the food is very good and reasonably priced. They are famous for their Chicken Fried Steak so we all had that with different delicious sides. Then it was back to the rig for me to finish up my work day. I believe it will be an early to bed night for all of us including The Boys. In fact, Pepper and Bailey are down for the count!
